MUNCIE, INDIANA AND MIKE PENCE

This morning's rally in Muncie, Indiana holds tremendous significance in the battle being fought for Planned Parenthood's federal funding and for the millions of women, men and teens our health centers serve. In many ways, you could say the "battle" originated here.

This morning we will be at Representative Mike Pence's district office. Rep. Pence is the one who proposed the amendment to solely exclude Planned Parenthood from all critical public health funding streams. This hurts Americans — taking away health care that millions of women receive today through Title X family planning programs. Representative Pence’s amendment is an unprecedented, ideological attack on Planned Parenthood that will result in more women losing access to the very basic health care they need. This amendment has already passed in the House of Representatives -- we must make sure it, or any legislation like it, is stopped in the Senate. Call your senator RIGHT NOW and demand he/she oppose this type of legislation.

On March 21, Representative Mike Pence said "I've never advocated reducing funding for Title X… Title X clinics do important work in our inner cities. They provide health services for women and children that might not otherwise have access to them" [NPR, 3/21/2011]

Well, we're on our way to a Planned Parenthood health center in Pence's District that provides those exact Title X services that Pence claims to "support." The truth is: if Mike Pence had his way, the Planned Parenthood health center in Muncie would be shut down, and women, children, and men would lose access to the cancer screenings, pap smears, STD testing, and other services that the Muncie health center, and other health centers across the country, provide to their community.
